Newsletter                                                                                                                            Volume 5, Issue 147          "The Rhythm of Life"  Beating Pollution with Recycled Materials   On September 5th, our school participated in the National Creative Percussion Competition 2009. In this competition not only did we have to make the instruments with recycled materials but had to produce beautiful music out of them too. We started off by collecting water cans, bottles, glasses, combs, buckets and a few dust bins. The percussion along with the rain stick instruments were very innovatively designed by Mrs. Meher Verghese, our Art Teacher .The latter was a cylindrical shaped cardboard piece with incisions on the sides where rulers had been inserted to obstruct the flow of the grains of rice which had been poured inside. This produced the sound of falling rain. When each of these instruments was played separately, it produced a sound which wasn t music to the ears but when played together, it was absolute symphony. We were eighteen studentsin our group and our Music Teacher, Mr. Anand Dhamelia, who apart from being our coach was also the composer of the piece. Our costume consisted of plain white T-shirts and jeans and we used phone cards, broken CDs and rolled garbage bags with designs on them made with   chocolate wrappers, as embellishments. We made some accessories out of plastic straws, groundnuts, scrubbers and silver foil. Our costume designer was also our Art Teacher. The auditions were at Ping Yi Secondary School. It went off smoothly. The judges appreciated our performance and we were very relieved and happy to be informed of our selection for the finals. The Grand Finale was held at the Republic Polytechnic in Woodlands. After registration and a brief run-through, we went up on stage, not before giving each other a Best of Luck hug . In the contest there were two categories, senior and junior. We were in the junior category.  A huge crowd was present there. Some of our teachers had come to cheer us. After an introductory speech by me, we took the stage ………by storm! The booming music of the various percussion instruments along with the energy that we displayed on stage left everybody spellbound.  We felt it was great, but we could not be sure about the result. As all the schools performed very well, it must have been a tough time for the judges too. After holding on to our breath for a time that seemed endless, we got to know that, our school had got the second prize. It sure was a red letter day in our lives.                                                                                    Anamika Rajiv Class VI A "We love our teachers" Teacher s Day was celebrated with a lot of gusto and fanfare, what with preparations starting a fortnight earlier. Notwithstanding the Damocles sword in the form of the Semester Examination hanging over our heads and the demanding hours of study, we did not leave any stone unturned to make this day for all the teachers to remember. Happiness and laughter spilled out of the staff room and infected the entire school, with each class vying with the other in putting up their own performance on stage in the form of either a dance, a skit or a song. There were Bollywood dances with children swaying to popular numbers, one act plays and beautiful rendition of songs. The entire programme was overseen by Class XII, which made sure it was heartfelt and enjoyable with the message, We Thank You Teachers coming across loud and clear. SINGAPORE: The Deepavali Festival Village and Bazaar will run from September 16 till October 19 in Little India.

The Little India Shopkeepers and Heritage Association's event will be held from 10am to 10pm daily at Campbell Lane and Kerbau Road.

To facilitate the traffic arrangements for the event, the following roads will be closed to all vehicular traffic:

Campbell Lane (between Serangoon Road and Clive Street) from 10.00am on Tuesday, September 15 to 8.00am on Monday, October 19.

One lane along Kerbau Road on Wednesday, September 16 to Monday, October 19 from 10.00am to 10.00pm daily.

Motorists are advised to avoid the affected area, including all peripheral roads leading to the area.

Auxiliary Police officers will be deployed at all affected road junctions to assist motorists and regulate traffic.

Parking restrictions along the peripheral roads will be strictly enforced. Vehicles found parking and causing obstruction will be towed away.

The Theatre upcoming production The Legend, The Journey Begins… happening on August 1 and 2.

The Legend, The Journey Begins… explores the Ramayana through the cohesion of Asian dance vocabularies and contemporary dance theatre. One of our objectives of this performance is to present the epic in a relevant and accessible manner to the Indian community and general public alike and to provide an understanding of lesser known Asian cultural art forms through the show.

The Legend; The Journey Begins... narrates the Ramayana epic through music, dance, theatre and multi-media with a cast of more than 20 dancers. Directed by Kavitha Krishnan, The Legend marks the first time a Singapore arts company explores Ramayana through the amalgamation of Asian dance vocabularies and contemporary dance theatre.

Rama Katha: The Ramayana of Tulsidas

Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society (SIFAS), Singapore's premier cultural organization promoting the Indian fine arts, is celebrating their sixtieth anniversary this year.

The celebration consists of a variety of concerts and other events throughout the year held in co-operation with other cultural and Indian organizations.
SIFAS will be presenting a lavish dance-drama "Rama Katha: The Ramayana of Tulsidas," on June 26th, Friday at 8:00 p.m. at the Jubilee Hall in Raffles Hotel.There are some 8 senior dancers from Mumbai's Kanaka Sabha, some 15 dancers from Singapore, and 4-5 Chinese and Malay dancers in this production which will depict the entire Ramayana from the childhood of Rama and Lakshmana until the coronation. The lyrics are in a Hindi dialect. And while the Ramayana needs no interpretation in any language to Indians, the production is subtitled in English so all Singaporeans/expats/tourists can follow the story line. The choreography is by Dr Siri Rama (of Singapore/Mumbai), and there are some 8-10 SIFAS students of Guru Minal Amit Dhamelia also dancing in the production. The orchestra features gurus, alumni of SIFAS and others - the music is a nice blend of Hindustani, Carnatic, and folk genres.
